Cyprus Sports Organization Faces Scrutiny: Minister Sought Board Suspension Amid Police Investigation

A report in the newspaper "Politis" reveals serious issues of legality and mismanagement within the Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO). The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, had prepared a proposal to suspend the CSO's Board of Directors and appoint a new one, due to payments made without proper oversight, problematic appointments, mismanagement of real estate, failure to collect rents, and other omissions. Despite the seriousness of the allegations and a parallel police investigation, the minister's proposal was not submitted to the Council of Ministers. The process was reportedly "frozen" following a legal opinion stating that CSO decisions were covered by the "necessity principle" due to the absence of a general manager. The Ministry had repeatedly requested explanations from the CSO without satisfactory response. The report highlights that the omissions may have led to a loss of state revenue and create risks at the European level, particularly regarding the new Limassol stadium and potential illegal state aid. The transfer of the then-Director General of the Ministry, Giorgos Panteli, who had proposed the suspension of the CSO Board, is seen by the publication as a political weakening of the control process. Both the Ministry and the President of the CSO have commented on the allegations. The Ministry states that the position of the CSO's general manager has been advertised and that the police investigation is ongoing, while the President of the CSO states that the investigation concerns the organization's leases and that efforts are being made to collect debts.
