Cyprus Shows Significant Reduction in Energy Intensity - Eurostat Data

According to Eurostat data, Cyprus has demonstrated a significant improvement in its energy efficiency between 2014 and 2023, with a decrease in energy intensity of 23.2%. At the European Union level, the net domestic energy consumption decreased by 4.1% in 2023, with the manufacturing sector (25.5%) and the energy sector (17.9%) accounting for the largest share of consumption. Estonia, Ireland, and the Netherlands recorded the largest reductions in energy intensity within the EU during this period, while only Malta and Lithuania experienced an increase. The reduction in Cyprus is part of a broader effort to restrain energy consumption and enhance sustainability. The energy and climate sector showed the largest decrease in consumption in 2023 (-8.7%), while transport and storage were the only activity to record an increase (8.1%). This increase in transport partially offset the overall reduction in energy consumption in the EU. Improving energy efficiency is considered critical for achieving the EU's climate goals and implementing a more sustainable economy. Cyprus, with its significant reduction in energy intensity, contributes to this effort and stands as an example of good practice.
