Cyprus Revives Railway Idea - Potential Route Revealed

Cyprus is preparing to revive its railway network after over 70 years, thanks to initiatives from the European Railway Industry (UNIFE) and support from the European Union. According to UNIFE, this is an ideal opportunity for Cyprus to reintroduce trains, benefiting both local residents and the millions of tourists who visit the island each year. Railways are presented as a sustainable mobility solution, capable of connecting major cities, reducing the carbon footprint, and offering an environmentally friendly alternative to car use. The initiative aims to boost tourism, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable mobility, especially in light of Cyprus's presidency of the EU Council in 2026. European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, supports the installation of modern railway systems, with a proposed route connecting Larnaca, Limassol, and Nicosia, improving connectivity and reducing carbon emissions. The European Commission plans to fund feasibility studies through the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) program, ensuring high sustainability standards. For tourism, the revival promises significant benefits, such as scenic routes connecting key locations, including Larnaca International Airport, reducing reliance on cars and taxis. It is expected to attract eco-conscious travelers, encourage greater exploration of areas like Troodos and Paphos, and create jobs in construction and operation. Historically, Cyprus operated the Cyprus State Railways until 1951, when it closed due to economic unviability. Despite challenges such as land acquisition and funding, EU support can help make the project a reality, transforming Cyprus into a model of sustainable tourism and economic development.
