Cyprus Ranks High in Motorization and Air Passenger Numbers in EU

According to Eurostat, Cyprus ranks fourth in the European Union in terms of motorization, with 661 passenger cars per thousand inhabitants in 2024. Simultaneously, it is the second country in the EU with the highest number of air passengers per inhabitant, with 12.5 passengers in 2024. The Eurostat report provides key data on transport in Europe, including infrastructure, economic impact, and environmental effects. Cyprus has a higher motorization rate than the EU average (578 cars per 1,000 inhabitants), while Italy, Luxembourg, and Finland have the highest rates. Conversely, Latvia, Romania, and Hungary have the lowest. Regarding air transport, Cyprus follows Malta, with high ratios also recorded in Luxembourg and Ireland. Countries in Eastern Europe have the lowest ratios of air passengers per inhabitant. The report also states that most transport in the EU concerns national routes, while in Cyprus 97.5% of vehicle kilometers concern national transport. Finally, in 2024, 6.3 million people worked in the transport sector in the EU, representing 3.1% of total employment.
