Cyprus Ranks High in Car Ownership and Air Passengers per Capita

According to Eurostat data, Cyprus ranks fourth in the EU for car ownership, with 661 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2024. Italy, Luxembourg, and Finland hold the top three positions, respectively. Conversely, Latvia, Romania, and Hungary have the lowest rates. Furthermore, Cyprus is second in the EU in the ratio of air passengers per capita, with 12.5 passengers in 2024, following Malta with 15.6. Southern European countries with strong tourism activity show higher ratios, while Eastern European countries have lower ones. The report indicates that the majority of journeys made within the EU concerned national transport, with Cyprus recording the highest percentage (97.5%) in this area. Lithuania, on the other hand, had the lowest percentage of national transport (11%). In terms of employment, 6.3 million people worked in transport in the EU in 2024, representing 3.1% of total employment. Romania had the highest percentage of employment in transport services (6.2%), while Cyprus and Germany had the lowest (1.7% and 1.8% respectively).
