Cyprus: Rainfall Beneficial But Dam Levels Remain at 26.9%

Despite the beneficial rainfall of this hydrological year, which led to the fourth-best inflow of the decade into the dams, the water reserve situation in Cyprus remains critical. Dam levels are at 26.9%, less than one-third of the total capacity. Senior Water Development Department Officer, Gianna Economidou, stressed the need for conscious water conservation. Recent rainfall has boosted reserves, with the inflow of water into the dams being the largest three-day inflow since January 2020. Many small dams have already overflowed, including Xyliatou, Argaka, Pomos, Kalopanagiotis, Klirou, Soleas and Lympia. However, the WDD remains cautious, as the goal is to ensure water adequacy not only for this year but also for the coming years. Rainfall until the end of April is crucial for assessing the situation and determining drought management measures. Ms. Economidou emphasized that the effort for water adequacy is collective and requires prudent consumption by citizens and the reduction of losses in the networks by the EOA. Regarding water losses from overflowing dams, she clarified that the water replenishes the groundwater aquifers.
