Cyprus Police Seek Powers to Immediately Revoke Driving Licenses

The Cyprus Police are requesting the authority to immediately revoke driving licenses from drivers involved in serious offenses, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This request stems from a growing trend of drivers breaking the law and concerning statistics, which show 11 fatalities in 2025 linked to driving under the influence. Furthermore, 3,226 reports were filed for exceeding the alcohol limit, and 869 drug tests came back positive. The proposed legislative change would allow the Police to issue immediate suspension notices, alongside criminal prosecution, avoiding time-consuming bureaucratic procedures. The Legal Service, the Police, and the Department of Road Transport are collaborating to promote this change, which is expected to contribute to reducing traffic accidents and saving lives.
