Deputy Government Spokesperson Yannis Antonious presented Cyprus's priorities ahead of its assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Cyprus will play a coordinating and mediating role, without exercising power, focusing on promoting pending legislative dossiers, such as the European budget, and managing crises, such as the Ukrainian situation. Regarding the international reaction to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, Mr. Antonious emphasized that Cyprus is acting in accordance with its national interests and in coordination with its European partners, adopting the common European line based on respect for international law. Concerning the Cyprus issue, Mr. Antonious clarified that it will not be directly on the Presidency's agenda but will be indirectly highlighted through the country's promotion and the presence of foreign officials and journalists. Furthermore, he defended the government's reforms (tax, pension, minimum wage), emphasizing that they are based on positive economic indicators and will proceed cautiously. He also dismissed accusations of double standards in energy matters.
