Cyprus on the List of Targets for Iranian Hackers Targeting Security Cameras

Cyprus is among the countries that have been targeted by cyberattacks on security cameras, with perpetrators linked to Iranian cyber actors, according to cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies. The attacks, observed since February 28, primarily target IP cameras in Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Cyprus. Researchers believe the attacks may be related to Iran's military strategy, as access to cameras can be used for operational support and damage assessment after attacks. The perpetrators are using infrastructure such as commercial VPNs and virtual private servers (VPS). The attacks focus on cameras from manufacturers Hikvision and Dahua Technology, exploiting known security vulnerabilities in their software. Similar activity was detected during the Israel–Iran conflict in 2025. Cybersecurity experts warn that the increased targeting of cameras may be a precursor to military actions and urge organizations and critical infrastructure operators to strengthen protection measures, such as isolating devices on separate networks and using strong passwords.
