Cyprus' National Guard Continues Modernization Efforts, Says Defense Minister

Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that the National Guard is undergoing continuous development and modernization to effectively address contemporary challenges. The strengthening of defense programs is being achieved through bilateral agreements with the US and Israel, as well as participation in the EU's SAFE program. The SAFE program, providing Cyprus with €1.2 billion, is considered crucial for bolstering the country's defense capabilities and promoting the involvement of the domestic defense industry in European collaborations. Furthermore, a delegation from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) is expected to visit to provide information on the Excess Defense Articles and Foreign Military Sales programs. The Ministry of Defense is exploring options within these programs, in consultation with US authorities, considering operational needs and strategic priorities. The role of the Cypriot defense industry is deemed important for enhancing the country's autonomy and resilience, reducing dependence on external suppliers. The Defense Minister's recent visit to Israel focused on bilateral relations in defense and security, emphasizing the evaluation of defense programs based on prevailing conditions. Finally, the Defense Minister assured that all necessary measures are being taken to adequately equip the National Guard, ensuring the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, while also strengthening its defensive capabilities and deterrent power.
