Cyprus Leads EU in Food Waste

Cyprus holds the negative record in the European Union for food waste, with an average of 132 kilograms per person per year. The EU has approved new binding rules to reduce waste, banning the destruction of unsold clothing and footwear and requiring the publication of data on product rejections. The ban will apply to large companies from July 2026 and to medium-sized companies from July 2030, while small and very small businesses are currently excluded. EU countries have 20 months to incorporate the directive into their national law. Food waste is a global problem, with one-third of all food produced being lost or wasted. The UN has designated September 29 as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, to raise awareness and mobilize action. In the EU, waste is distributed as follows: 72 kg in households, 25 in processing, 15 in restaurants, 11 in retail and 10 in production. This waste has significant social and environmental impacts, as millions of people around the world face hunger and poverty.
