Cyprus: Health Minister Assures Hospital Situation is Manageable Despite Flu Cases

The Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambidis, stated that the situation in hospitals is manageable following increased hospitalizations due to seasonal infections and that no additional measures are currently needed. Ensuring beds from private hospitals is not considered necessary. Increased visits to Accident and Emergency Departments are a perennial challenge every winter. The epidemiological picture remains at similar levels to last year, potentially even slightly lower, and the NHO reassured that the situation is being handled effectively. The Ministry is informed daily about bed occupancy. Regarding RSV, the situation is being closely monitored and guidelines are being continuously issued. It is noted that cases of influenza, RSV, and COVID are declining. Further decisions will be taken if necessary. The number of deaths from influenza remains at 32, with strong public response to vaccination. Special free immunizations are available for infants through Gesy pediatricians, and a vaccine is available for adults. Finally, it is estimated that the possibility of a second wave of influenza is small and is expected to be milder than the first, with the dominance of strain B. Vulnerable groups and the elderly are encouraged to get vaccinated preemptively.
