Cyprus FM Expresses 'Disappointment' Over UN 'Equal Distance' Approach

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed “disappointment” over the United Nations’ longstanding tendency to maintain equal distance in the reports of the Secretary-General on Good Offices and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). It believes that this approach leads to a “fragmented and inaccurate picture” of the actual conditions on the ground, resulting from the Turkish occupation. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the reaffirmation of the Secretary-General’s commitment to restarting negotiations for a sustainable and comprehensive solution, based on the agreed framework and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. It also welcomes the holding of “substantial discussions” on fundamental issues of the Cyprus problem, for the first time in five years. The Ministry expresses strong concern about the situation in the enclosed area of Varosha, attributing sole responsibility to Turkey and demanding full compliance with Security Council resolutions. It also points out violations of the ceasefire line by the occupying army, especially in the Deryneia area. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the need for a more accurate and complete depiction of the situation in Cyprus by the United Nations, in order to create a climate of trust and facilitate the achievement of a just and viable solution.
