Cyprus Fire Service: Over 94% of Fires Caused by Human Factor

The Cyprus Fire Service has announced a 6.51% increase in the total number of fires in 2025 compared to the previous year, with estimated financial damages reaching €134,576,665, primarily due to the large fire in Limassol. The area of countryside burned increased by 116.99 sq. km, reaching 133.46 sq. km. In total, the Fire Service responded to 13,401 calls, of which 7,154 were related to fires (3,569 countryside and 3,585 urban). The increase in countryside fires reached 8.81%, with a significant increase in January, February, and March due to drought and faulty chimneys. In April, the increase was due to the burning of objects during Easter celebrations. Despite the increase in the first months, a decrease in countryside fires was observed during the fire prevention period (July-October) due to preventive measures and stricter penalties. The main causes of countryside fires are burning of fields, deliberate fires, burning of waste, discarding cigarettes, and the use of tools that cause sparks. The Fire Service, in collaboration with other departments (Forestry, Police, Game), intensified patrols and public awareness campaigns to prevent fires. Importantly, over 94% of fires are caused by human factors and activities, highlighting the need for greater care and responsibility from the public. The Fire Service continues to implement information and prevention campaigns while strengthening collaboration with other services for more effective fire management.
