Cyprus Faces Up to 30% Honey Production Decrease Due to Weather Conditions

Honey production in Cyprus is expected to decrease by up to 30% due to unfavorable weather conditions. Senior Agricultural Officer Lysandros Lysandrides points out that this reduction is due to climate change, habitat loss due to urbanization and fires, and the irrational use of pesticides. Bees, which play a critical role in pollination and maintaining biodiversity, are facing global pressure, with significant losses in countries like Bulgaria and the United States. Despite the efforts of Cypriot beekeepers to address the losses, production is negatively affected by extreme weather conditions. Furthermore, unfair competition from cheap imported honey, especially from China, is a major problem for the sector, jeopardizing the sustainability of local beekeeping. The government is implementing support measures, but the price difference between Cypriot and imported honey remains substantial.
