Cyprus Emphasizes Culture as a Cornerstone of EU Building

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassiandou, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the fields of culture and media to the European Parliament. She emphasized that culture is a fundamental pillar of European construction and not merely a supplementary policy. During a session of the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT), Ms. Kassiandou stated that the Presidency's cultural program focuses on culture as a bridge for dialogue and a common European identity. She also highlighted the importance of culture in strengthening European values among citizens. The Deputy Minister stressed the need for cooperation to promote cultural issues, as well as the role of culture and the media in safeguarding European democracy, freedom of expression, and pluralism. She expressed her belief that culture should be at the center of public policy. She referred to the 'Compass for Culture' as a critical strategic milestone, as for the first time the EU has a coherent policy framework that places culture at the core of European policy-making. She also presented the new AgoraEU program, which aims to fund culture, media, and civil society.
