Cyprus is at the center of international attention, but for negative reasons, following the release of a video that has sparked a political storm. The video, posted on X by an account named "Emily Thompson", presents conversations between three Cypriots – former Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis, Presidential Office Director Charalambos Charalambous, and businessman Giorgos Chrysoschos – with individuals allegedly interested in investing in Cyprus. These conversations reportedly reveal illegal funding methods and discussions about circumventing EU sanctions, including assistance to Russian citizens. The Cypriot government has dismissed the allegations, describing the video as a "hybrid activity" aimed at damaging the country's image, especially during its EU Council presidency. The opposition, however, is calling for a thorough investigation and further action. Politico reports that Cyprus is being shaken by serious corruption allegations. According to research by Fact Check Cyprus, the video does not show obvious technical signs of manipulation using artificial intelligence, but the context of its production, the possibility of editing, and the identity of its creators remain unclear. The video includes footage of the three men discussing ways to bypass election spending limits through cash donations, as well as a plan that would allow entrepreneurs direct access to the President and First Lady. The case has caused significant disruption in Cyprus, as the government is called upon to manage internal controversy while simultaneously exercising its presidency of the Council of the EU. The publication of the photograph and details of the 27-year-old who was arrested for other burglary and theft cases, was made by the police in order to collect information. This publication is no longer necessary following his identification.
