Cyprus Education Ministry Issues Guidelines on Student Grades

The Cyprus Ministry of Education has issued guidelines to secondary schools regarding the handling of potential errors in the recording of student grades. The circular states that unintentional errors may occur during the transfer of grades from the teacher's grade book to the system, which may affect assessments, awards, and distinctions. In the event of an error, the teacher must submit written documentation to the principal, which will be reviewed by the General Inspector. Regarding complaints from parents or guardians about a student's assessment, these must be submitted to the school principal. The principal, in collaboration with the teacher, coordinator, and inspector, will make a final decision and inform the parent/guardian in writing. If the grade is increased, the principal must inform the General Inspector's Office for approval of the change in the ABACIO system. The guidelines emphasize that changes to quarterly grades must be made within five working days of the grade announcement. The need for these guidelines arises from previous cases of errors and the desire to avoid undesirable situations for students, teachers, and parents. The Ministry of Education seeks to ensure the transparency and accuracy of the grading process, as well as the proper functioning of schools. The timely and correct management of grades is considered crucial for avoiding problems and protecting the rights of students.
