Cyprus Convenes Emergency Meeting in Brussels Over Trump Threats

Cyprus convened an emergency meeting in Brussels today, Sunday, with the participation of the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states, to discuss the response to President Trump's threats to impose new 10% tariffs on countries sending troops to Greenland, as a sign of opposition to his plans to annex the region. Trump's threats have provoked strong reactions from EU leaders, who have warned of a "dangerous downward spiral." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa stated that Europe would remain united and committed to defending its sovereignty. Belgian Prime Minister Kaya Kalas warned that the tariffs would harm prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic and distract the EU from addressing the war in Ukraine. She stressed that China and Russia would benefit from divisions among allies.
