Cyprus Continues Work Amidst Regional Crisis, President Assures

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, assured from Brussels that the Cypriot Presidency continues its work despite the crisis in the Middle East. During the Tripartite Social Summit, the President emphasized that daily life in Cyprus remains unchanged, contrary to what is presented in some international media. He highlighted Cyprus' dual role as a member of the EU but also a country in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, clarifying that it is not part of the crisis, but faces an isolated incident in British bases. The President Christodoulides conveyed the expectations of the countries in the region from the EU, calling on the Union to show genuine interest in its neighborhood and to lead a de-escalation process in cooperation with third countries. He expressed gratitude for the support Cyprus received from European countries, noting that although Article 42.7 was not activated, the support offered was substantial. Furthermore, President Christodoulides sent a message to investors and businesses, assuring them that Cyprus is a safe, stable and fully functional hub for businesses, investments and tourism. This statement comes at a time of increased uncertainty in the region, aiming to reassure stakeholders and maintain economic activity. In parallel, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, described the situation in the Middle East as "particularly worrying," pointing out that even Cyprus has been targeted by a proxy of Iran, highlighting the risk of escalation of the conflict. Costa called on all parties to exercise restraint and give diplomacy a chance.
