Cyprus Civil Defence on Full Alert Following Incident in Akrotiri

The Cyprus Civil Defence Force was placed on full alert following information about an incident in the British Bases area of Akrotiri. The Commander of the Civil Defence, Maria Papa, stated that the Service received information from the National Guard and immediately activated its forces, coordinating with Local Authorities and the British Bases. Despite the lack of an immediate threat to civilians, the possibility of proactive accommodation for citizens at the Limassol KED was offered. Teams of the Force remained on site for precautionary reasons, and coordination took place with the Cyprus Red Cross for the possible provision of vehicles for people with disabilities or vulnerable groups. Information from the National Guard was continuous and confirmed that the airspace was clear, according to the British Bases. All actions were taken proactively, it was emphasized. There are approximately 2,500 shelters in Cyprus, covering 40 to 45% of the population. Citizens can locate the nearest shelter via the SafeCY application or by contacting the Civil Defence Crisis Control Centre. In case of a lack of shelter, it is recommended to stay in an interior space with a solid structure or seek protection in a trench or ditch. Public information in case of danger is provided through sirens, the mass media and other available communication channels. Shelter coverage has increased from 30% to 45%, and new incentives for the construction of underground shelters are being considered.
