Cyprus Citizens Stranded in UAE, Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Cypriot authorities are continuing diplomatic efforts and repatriation attempts for Cypriot citizens stranded in the region following recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran. According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these contacts include EU member states and institutions, as well as third countries. The activation of an EU solidarity clause is not currently being considered, with processes continuing at a bilateral level. The largest number of stranded Cypriot citizens are located in the United Arab Emirates, where their accommodation in Abu Dhabi is covered by the state at no cost. A different process of compensating reservations is followed in Dubai, while financial resources of the Republic are also being utilized. Furthermore, a group of Cypriot citizens are on a cruise ship in a safe area of Qatar, and a small group is in Bahrain, for whom efforts are being made to transfer them to an airport in Saudi Arabia and then to Cyprus. Developments depend on the condition of the airspace and airports. Regarding the ESTIA Plan, there are no new developments, although exploratory contacts have been made. The activation of the plan will depend on the opening of airspace. The situation remains difficult and requires organization, patience and cooperation.
