Cyprus Children's Rights Commissioner Condemns MEP's 'Disgraceful' Remarks About People with Disabilities

The Cyprus Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child strongly condemned remarks made by MEP Pheidi Panayiotou about people with disabilities, describing them as “unacceptable, demeaning and deeply stigmatizing”. The Commissioner stressed that the use of a stigmatizing term for people with disabilities is not merely a slip of the tongue, but perpetuates stereotypes and reinforces social exclusion. The Commissioner highlighted that the language we use plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions and attitudes towards social groups, and that the language of individuals with institutional power has a particularly significant impact. She emphasized that such practices contribute to the normalization of discrimination and undermine human rights. The Commissioner called for genuine reflection, both at the individual and political and institutional levels, on how we express ourselves and intervene publicly, to ensure the dignity and rights of all, without exception. The Commissioner's announcement represents a clear condemnation of the use of offensive and stigmatizing language towards people with disabilities. This case highlights the importance of raising awareness and providing education about the use of language and avoiding stereotypes and discrimination against vulnerable groups.
