Cyprus Braces for Peak Flu Season, COVID Resurgence Warning

Dr. Petros Karayiannis, speaking on a SIGMA show, expressed concern about the peak of the flu season in Cyprus and the potential impact of COVID. He referred to the 13 deaths from the flu, noting that one of them involved a 54-year-old, a relatively rare occurrence. He emphasized that the deaths involved individuals with underlying conditions, but warned that the increase in cases, possibly due to the K sub-strain, should not be underestimated. Mr. Karayiannis estimated that the peak of the flu has not yet been reached and is expected within the next few days, with the possibility of a second wave following due to influenza B. He stressed the importance of vaccination for vulnerable groups, as this is the best way to protect themselves. A significant difference exists in the vaccination rates for the flu and COVID. While 145,000 out of 160,000 flu vaccines have been administered, only 4,500 COVID vaccines have been given. Mr. Karayiannis expressed the view that the low vaccination coverage against COVID will lead to problems, as herd immunity is not being replenished. He characteristically stated that "at some point it will hit us hard," indicating that a strain with widespread transmission will emerge, like the K sub-strain of the flu currently. He warned that the lack of vaccination will have consequences for public health.
