Cyprus Auditor General Alarms Over AHK's Limited Renewable Energy Penetration

The Auditor General of Cyprus expresses strong concerns about the delay of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (AHK) in utilizing Renewable Energy Sources (RES), describing the situation as “criminal.” The limited penetration of AHK into RES creates opportunities for private energy producers and suppliers, who are reaping significant financial benefits. The Audit Office is also investigating potential circumvention of the law through the use of Cypriot companies to acquire property by foreigners, as well as the creation of links between private energy suppliers. The investigation focuses on the possibility of collusion between private individuals to maintain high prices and avoid competition. The Auditor General emphasizes the need for transparency and effective control in the energy market to ensure that consumers benefit from the lower prices offered by RES. The Audit Office report is expected to reveal significant responsibilities and omissions by the AHK management, the Ministry of Energy, and the CERA.
