Cyprus Attorney General Voices Concerns Over Proposed Review of Prosecution Decisions

The Attorney General of Cyprus, Giorgos Savvides, expressed serious reservations regarding the government bill for judicial review of the decisions of the Attorney General regarding the non-exercise of criminal prosecution or its suspension. During the discussion at the Parliamentary Control Committee, Savvides emphasized the complexity of separating powers and proposed strengthening internal procedures before implementing external control. Objections were also raised by the Registrar of the Supreme Court, who fears an overload of the courts, and by an MP from AKEL, who disagreed with the bill proposed by DIKO. The Committee Chairman stated that legislation for which there is no certainty of constitutional correctness will not be promoted.
