Cyprus and Greece's Murky Response to Venezuela Intervention

The intervention in Venezuela and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by Donald Trump have been widely condemned as a violation of international law. However, the Cypriot government opted for a stance of 'silence' and 'equal distance', limiting itself to a lukewarm tweet calling for de-escalation without condemning the US action. This diplomatic choice has been strongly criticized, as it is seen as equating victim and perpetrator and opening the door to unpredictability, especially given the Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus. Simultaneously, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed hope for a 'new hope' in Venezuela, provoking the outrage of the KKE, which accused the Greek government of hypocrisy and complicity. The stance of both governments was compared to the lack of condemnation of the genocide in Gaza, highlighting a trend of subservience to the US and Israel, which is being exploited by Turkey.
