Cypriots Stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: "We are Trapped and Receiving No Support"

Hundreds of Cypriot tourists are stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, many of whom report being left without money and receiving no support. The stranded individuals claim they are seeking help from the Republic of Cyprus but are not receiving a response. The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifies that accommodation costs are covered by the United Arab Emirates, but the process differs between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In Abu Dhabi, expenses are covered directly, while in Dubai citizens must pay upfront and then claim reimbursement. Cyprus has requested that Dubai adopt the Abu Dhabi practice to avoid financial burden on the stranded. Additionally, accommodation costs are covered for those who traveled with Emirates airlines, but not for those who used other airlines. The Republic of Cyprus hopes to repatriate the 300 Cypriots stranded in the two states. The Cypriot embassy in the UAE has provided the hotline 600 555 559 and the email [email protected] to provide information and clarification to the stranded. Despite the efforts, complaints are expected due to the criticality of the situation and the need for immediate return.
