Cypriot Presidency Takes Helm of EU Council at Crucial Moment for EU Ocean Policy

Oceana urges the incoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU to prioritize the restoration of fisheries and ocean health as a strategic pillar for the EU. Cyprus, as an island nation and home to the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, has a particular responsibility to ensure progress after decades of effort. Oceana warns against potential setbacks due to pressure from industrial lobbies seeking to simplify legislation, which could jeopardize ocean recovery. The Cypriot Presidency coincides with a critical period for European marine policy. The European Commission will complete its evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and decide on a possible revision. Simultaneously, initiatives such as the development of the EU Ocean Act, the formulation of a vision for fisheries until 2040, and the achievement of international marine protection targets will be promoted. Oceana proposes specific actions for the Cypriot Presidency, including supporting an Ocean Act that will unify EU marine policies, ensuring the implementation of the CFP, and accelerating the transition to sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, it calls for the restoration of fish populations, the fight against illegal fishing, the prohibition of destructive fishing in protected marine areas and in deep Mediterranean waters, and the revision of regulations for the common organization of the market to provide consumer information on seafood. The Cypriot Presidency is called upon to play a crucial role in shaping and implementing policies that will restore and protect the health, abundance, and biodiversity of the oceans, for the benefit of the planet and coastal communities that depend on the sea.
