Cypriot Company Falls Victim to Email Scam - Loses Over €120,000

Police are investigating a new case of online fraud, where a company in Nicosia was deceived and lost over €120,000. The perpetrators sent a false email appearing to be from a collaborating company abroad, informing them of a change in bank details. Following the instructions in the email, the company made payments to the new bank account between December and January 26th. When the company contacted its collaborator directly, it discovered that the email was fraudulent and the bank details had not been changed. The fraud was reported to the Police, and the Financial Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the case. Police are warning the public to verify the authenticity of emails regarding changes in bank details by contacting their collaborators by phone. It is recommended to use telephone numbers that have been used in the past or are listed in previous communications, to avoid contacting the fraudsters. Company owners and managers are urged to inform their staff about this type of fraud and to implement procedures for verifying payment requests. Police provide more information and advice on their website.
