Crucial Role of Bioethics in Respecting Human Dignity

Professor Konstantinos N. Felllas, Senior Vice-Rector of the University of Nicosia, participated in a high-level Scientific Conference on cardiovascular health at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of preventing cardiovascular diseases, the impact of COVID-19, and the critical role of the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee (CNBC) in protecting participants in scientific research. Professor Felllas, as President of the CNBC, highlighted that life and health are supreme goods that must be safeguarded. He pointed out that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and the most expensive part of healthcare services in Europe, consuming 20% of financial resources. Referring to Cyprus, Professor Felllas stressed that ischemic heart disease and strokes are the two main causes of death. He warned of the "invisible pandemic" of cardiovascular diseases, pointing out risk factors such as lack of exercise, poor diet, stress, and smoking. Finally, Professor Felllas analyzed the responsibilities of the CNBC, which focuses on protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of participants in scientific research. He underlined the importance of bioethics in scientific progress and the need for responsible research.
