Congress Greenlights Bill Promoting Eastern Mediterranean's Role in IMEC Corridor

The "Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act," aimed at advancing the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), has passed through the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the US Congress. The bill seeks to strengthen energy and defense cooperation with key regional countries, including Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt, and to connect their infrastructure to the IMEC. It supports projects like the “Great Sea Interconnector,” the Greece-Egypt electricity interlink, and the Greece-Bulgaria gas pipeline, considered crucial for Europe's energy security. The legislation calls on the US Secretary of State to prioritize the Eastern Mediterranean in American foreign policy and bolster existing cooperation frameworks, such as the 3+1 (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the US) and the East Mediterranean Gas Forum. Furthermore, it promotes regional convergence by strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, including the Abraham Accords. Due to the upcoming midterm elections in the US, it is anticipated that the bill will be advanced through amendments to budget-related legislation for the government and the Pentagon. This means its final form and implementation may be influenced by political developments. The bill also mandates annual reports to Congress on its implementation and the progress of energy and defense projects in the region. Additionally, it requests a feasibility study for establishing bilateral cooperation programs with Eastern Mediterranean countries, modeled after successful Greek-Israeli initiatives.
