Concerns Raised Regarding Police Cameras in Cyprus

Published February 18, 2026, 14:18

The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs has begun the article-by-article discussion of the government bill concerning the possibility of equipping members of the Cyprus Police with portable cameras on their uniforms and vehicles. MP Andreas Pasourtidis of AKEL expressed concerns about the potential for abusive use of the material collected by the cameras and the protection of human rights. He emphasized the need to ensure access to the evidence material, protect it from inappropriate use, and preserve it for the purposes of the legislation, including the protection of citizens. Mr. Pasourtidis requested that the Ministry of Justice and relevant authorities provide answers to ensure that the new tool will strengthen policing and citizen protection without violating human rights.
