Concerns in Parliament over Delays in Desalination Projects

Strong concerns were expressed in the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture regarding the delays in the implementation of desalination projects in Cyprus and the overall management of the water problem. Committee members highlighted delays in both the planning and execution of projects, while the EAC Nicosia warned that the water levels in the Lakatamia reservoirs barely cover demand, given the annual increase in new water connections by 5-7%. The Committee President, Yannakis Gavriel, pointed out that repeated announcements have been made without substantial progress, while assurances were given for the creation of new desalination units within five years. MPs submitted questions regarding timelines, tenders and the implementation of the plan which includes a total of nine units. The Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, presented a detailed picture of the desalination projects, stating that there is a decision for two large units: one in Dekelia, with a capacity of 80,000 cubic meters per day, and one in eastern Limassol, with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day. The tender for the Dekelia unit is expected to be announced in early 2027, while the Limassol unit by the end of 2026. In addition, smaller projects are underway or planned, while units operate in Kissonerga (12,000 cubic meters per day) and from the United Arab Emirates (15,000 cubic meters per day). However, delays are also recorded in other units, such as in Garylli and Mazotos, where implementation depends on the completion of environmental studies and faces local opposition.
