Complaint Against Police Officer Sparks Debate on Freedom of Expression

The complaint filed by Nicoletta Tsikkini against a police officer seconded to the Cyprus Intelligence Service (KΥΠ) has triggered a discussion in the Human Rights Committee regarding freedom of expression and criticism towards the government. The debate focused on the fact that the officer publicly disclosed her full details online, making them accessible to everyone, while the legal framework regarding the disclosure of KΥΠ members' identities was also questioned. The Police state that a criminal offense may be constituted, but an official complaint from Ms. Tsikkini is required. Simultaneously, she risks facing charges for revealing the identity of a KΥP member. The Committee disagreed with the proposal by a DISY MP to examine the case in the Institutions Committee, as it believes that issues of freedom of expression should be discussed publicly.
