Competitiveness, Middle East, and Ukraine on the Agenda of the European Council

President Christodoulides expressed optimism for specific decisions to be made at the European Council, focusing on strengthening the EU's competitiveness. He emphasized the need for clear political messages regarding the Middle East, calling on the EU to take initiatives for de-escalation and an end to the war, as well as to substantially support Lebanon. He also referred to the discussion on the mutual assistance clause (Article 42(7)), highlighting the value of European solidarity and the need for mechanisms to immediately support member states. This discussion will continue at an Informal European Council in Cyprus in April. Decisions regarding the impact of the war on energy prices were not ruled out, while a discussion with the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue is expected, aiming to restart substantial negotiations.
