Communities in Akamas: Pig Farmers Invade Crops and Steal Products

A brazen scheme involving the theft and sale of agricultural products is resurfacing in communities in Laona, Paphos, following new complaints filed with the Police. The scheme was initially brought to light by the “Phileleftheros” newspaper last April, and after a period of inactivity, the perpetrators appear to have resumed their practices. According to complaints received by authorities and local officials, women are entering fields, sometimes driving quad bikes, stealing agricultural produce, and immediately selling it to individuals waiting nearby. The latest incident came to light when a female farmer discovered a woman entering her field on a quad bike. According to the complainant, when the woman noticed the farmer, she began taking photos with her mobile phone and claimed she was there to photograph the surrounding area. However, the farmer had already noticed that a large number of her products had been harvested and placed in bags next to the quad bike. Shortly after, a commercial vehicle appeared, and the driver purchased the produce from the woman, initially offering a smaller amount before increasing it to 40 euros. The farmer managed to photograph the quad bike before the woman left and filed a complaint. The issue appears to be widespread, as other landowners have also reported similar thefts and immediate sales of products, indicating an organized operation. The complaints have also been made to local officials. MP Chrysanthos Savvides confirmed the reports, describing it as an organized gang. Residents and farmers in Droussia and other areas have reported that women on quad bikes are literally invading crops, harvesting the produce, and then selling it to individuals in vehicles, suggesting a well-coordinated scheme.
