Commission Invests Additional €650 Million in Cross-Border Energy Infrastructure

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it will allocate nearly €650 million in grants through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to fund 14 cross-border energy projects. These projects, according to the Commission, aim to strengthen the EU's energy security, better integrate renewable energy sources, and ultimately increase Europe's competitiveness. This funding exceeds the initial budget of €600 million, reflecting the strong interest in the first call for proposals in 2024. Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, had stated that the Commission aims to significantly exceed the CEF's overall initial budget. For the first time, the CEF will fund projects to protect critical energy infrastructure and hydrogen projects, indicating the maturity of the sector. The funding is allocated to 6 electricity infrastructure projects, including smart grids, and 8 hydrogen infrastructure projects. Notable projects being funded include the construction of the reversible AGUAYO II hydroelectric plant in Spain, strengthening the resilience of energy infrastructure in the Baltics, the CARMEN project for the digitalization of electricity networks in Romania and Bulgaria, and the construction of the first cross-border underground hydrogen storage facility in Germany. Formal approval of the grants is expected in the coming weeks, with the next call for proposals scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.
