Commission Approves SAFE Packages for France and Czech Defense, Hungary Pending

The European Commission has approved the national defense plans of France and the Czech Republic under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, further strengthening the security and readiness of the Union. The Czech Republic will receive €2.06 billion and France €15.09 billion after the signing of loan agreements. These funds will be used to strengthen strategic capabilities. The evaluation of the Hungarian defense plan is ongoing and the Commission will approve it as soon as it is ready, according to the Commission's spokesperson for Defense, Toma Renier. The approval of the plans followed the finalization of funding amounts in September, based on the principles of solidarity and transparency. The Council has already approved implementing decisions for 16 member states, including Cyprus, in the first wave of approvals in January. After approval by the Council, the Commission will complete the loan agreements and the first payments are expected in April 2026. The SAFE initiative aims to strengthen the EU's defense capabilities by providing financial assistance to member states to develop and enhance their military capabilities. The approval of the national plans is a significant step towards a stronger and more autonomous European Union in the field of defense.
