Colorless, Odorless and Deadly: The 'Insidious' Substance Behind the Larnaca Tragedy

The tragedy in Larnaca has brought to light a insidious substance, gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), which is colorless, odorless, and almost tasteless. When ingested, this substance rapidly converts to gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a potent central nervous system depressant that can cause loss of consciousness, serious bodily harm, and even death. GBL is used as an industrial solvent in cleaning products and the chemical industry. Its difficulty in detection makes it particularly dangerous, as it can be mixed into drinks or water without being noticed. In the past, the substance circulated in the bodybuilding and fitness world, often adulterated in dietary supplements, with misleading promises of performance enhancement. However, it has none of the advertised properties, but instead causes relaxation, reduces inhibitions, and induces euphoria and drowsiness. GBL has been classified as a 'club drug' and is used in chemsex situations, causing loss of inhibitions, consciousness, and memory lapses. Worryingly, there is no 'safe' dose, as the body's reaction can vary depending on the day and individual sensitivity. Mixing it with other depressant substances dramatically increases the risk.
