Citizens Outperform Businesses – Homes are the Biggest Renewable Energy Producers in Cyprus

In Cyprus, residential photovoltaic systems have surpassed large-scale photovoltaic parks in installed capacity and production, becoming the largest source of renewable energy. According to the latest data, the installed capacity of residential photovoltaics reached 447.16 MW in 2025, compared to 353.02 MW for large parks. This increase is due to the growing preference of citizens for investments in renewable energy sources, resulting in a reduced reliance on large companies in the sector. Approximately 93,000 households produce enough energy to meet the needs of around 105,000 households monthly, with an average consumption of 500-600 kilowatt-hours. Energy production from residential photovoltaics amounted to 61,145 MWh per month, of which 22.3 million kilowatt-hours are exported to the grid. In total, the installed capacity from all renewable energy sources in Cyprus amounts to 1,096,831 MW, with residential photovoltaics holding the largest share. This is followed by large photovoltaic parks, net billing systems (commercial installations for self-consumption), and other renewable energy systems such as biomass and wind farms. This trend is expected to continue, as thousands of applications for the installation of residential photovoltaics are pending with the EAC, indicating a growing shift by citizens towards self-energy production and energy independence.
