Christodoulides: "Unity will determine the future of Europe"

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council to the European Parliament, emphasizing that unity is Europe's greatest strength and crucial for its future. He stressed the need for collective action, cross-sectoral and cross-border cooperation, in order to translate unity into results. President Christodoulides pointed out that the Presidency begins at a turning point for the Union, requiring action, determination and credibility. He emphasized the need for a more autonomous and open Europe. He expressed his honor and pride in representing Cyprus, a member state located at the “southeastern edge” of the EU and under illegal occupation. He recognized the European Union as a unique political and economic undertaking, where each member state has an equal position and the opportunity to lead and represent the Union. He acknowledged that the Union is not perfect, but its ability to evolve and unite in the face of challenges makes it stand out. The Presidency's program is structured around five interconnected pillars, with an emphasis on Autonomy through Security, Defense and Preparedness. President Christodoulides stressed the need to strengthen the European security architecture and defense readiness, given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and emphasized that for Cyprus, which is under occupation, security is of paramount importance.
