Christodoulides – Starmer: British Bases on the Table After the Crisis

President Christodoulides held a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, at the latter's initiative, regarding geopolitical developments and the recent crisis. President Christodoulides presented a specific proposal for initiating discussions regarding the British Bases in Cyprus, taking into account lessons learned from crisis management. He emphasized Cyprus' role as a pillar of stability and the need to strengthen cooperation with the United Kingdom, as well as the importance of a multilateral approach to de-escalate the crisis. The British Prime Minister agreed with the need for de-escalation and referred to the joint statement with other countries regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated that the security of Cyprus is fundamental to the United Kingdom and pledged to strengthen preventative measures. He also confirmed that the British Bases would not be used in any offensive military operations. President Christodoulides proposed initiating related discussions on the matter, seeking a constructive approach. The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact, given developments in the region and common challenges.
