China Unveils the World’s Longest Urban Escalator: Reaching the Top of a Mountain City

In the mountainous city of Chongqing, China, the Wushan Goddess, the world’s longest urban escalator, has been inaugurated. Measuring 905 meters in length and 242 meters in height – equivalent to an 80-story building – this escalator aims to improve the daily lives of residents by significantly reducing commuting time in a city with a pronounced mountainous terrain. The Wushan Goddess is not just a means of transportation, but has become integrated into the urban landscape of the city, offering a quick, comfortable, and safe alternative for ascending to the higher suburbs. Its construction has been designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy use, without altering the natural beauty of the area. Chongqing is known for its vertical urban development, with steep slopes and high mountains. The Wushan Goddess is a continuation of the existing Crown Grand Escalator, which connects the railway station to the monorail station. China has invested in similar projects in other regions, such as in Jiangxi Province, where the Stairway to the Clouds offers an alternative solution for ascending Mount Lingshan. Unlike the Stairway to the Clouds, which is primarily aimed at tourists, the Wushan Goddess is designed to improve the daily lives of residents, offering a practical solution for their commutes in a city characterized by its mountainous terrain. This project is an example of pioneering infrastructure adapted to a difficult environment.
