China: Top General Accused of Leaking Nuclear Secrets to US

China's highest-ranking general, Zhang Yuxia, is accused of leaking critical information about the country's nuclear program to the United States, as well as accepting bribes in exchange for promotions of high-ranking officials. These allegations were revealed by the Wall Street Journal and come amid a widespread purge of China's military leadership, the most aggressive since the era of Mao Zedong. The investigation began following a briefing of senior officials. Zhang is accused of forming a political clique and abusing power within the Central Military Commission. Additionally, he is alleged to have received vast sums of money to promote officers within an agency responsible for the research, development, and procurement of military materials. The most shocking accusation concerns the leakage of key technical data about China's nuclear weapons to the US. According to sources, some of the evidence comes from Gu Jun, former general manager of China National Nuclear Corp., who is also under investigation. The Chinese side has announced that the investigation underscores the leadership's "full coverage and zero tolerance" for corruption. Analysts consider Zhang's downfall to be "unprecedented" and a "total extermination" of the high command, given his close ties to leader Xi Jinping. The investigation is also linked to the promotion of former Defense Minister Li Shangfu, who is said to have been promoted in exchange for bribes.
