China Calls for End to War, Warning of Economic Impact

China has called for an end to the war in the Middle East, warning of the impact on energy, shipping, and trade. The conflict, which has lasted nearly three weeks, shows no signs of slowing down. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed that the use of violence is not a solution and that armed conflict will only create hatred. Lin stated that the war in the Middle East affects the common interests of all countries and reiterated Beijing's position for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of energy flows. China also referred to the war in Iraq in 2003, pointing out the negative consequences of the intervention and the rise of the Islamic State. The war has uneven consequences for China, offering it the opportunity to present itself as a reliable superpower, but at the same time threatens its economy due to rising energy costs and disruption of the "Belt and Road" initiative. The prevailing uncertainty has led to the postponement of a meeting between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.
