CERA: Energy Discussion Should Be Based on Evidence

The Electricity Market Association (CERA) responded to statements made by the President of EAC regarding access to renewable energy sources (RES). CERA emphasizes that the energy discussion should be based on documented evidence and not on misleading impressions. According to the Association, EAC Supply has the largest access to installed RES capacity in Cyprus, with power purchase agreements from RES at 11 cents/kWh exceeding the total capacity of private photovoltaic parks. CERA also points out that reports on the cost of Net Metering and Net Billing systems are misleading, as the energy exported from these systems reduces EAC's costs and replaces the need for expensive conventional fuels. Regarding Net Billing, EAC purchases surplus energy from consumers at a price of 11 cents, reducing the use of conventional fuels. The Association expresses concern about EAC's position on expanding bilateral contracts with private RES producers, wondering why EAC's costs have not decreased despite increased access to RES. It suggests that EAC is seeking to eliminate competition in the electricity market and jeopardize the smooth functioning of the Competitive Electricity Market. Finally, CERA emphasizes the need to resolve issues with inaccurate metering data for market transparency and reliability. It also notes that the tender and award of the upgrade of the Dekeleia power station have been pending since 2022.
