Central Prisons: Second Phase for Mobile Phone Blocking System to Proceed

The Electromechanical Services Department is proceeding with the second phase of installing a mobile phone blocking system at the Central Prisons. The first phase, which is almost complete, focuses on detecting mobile phones and has been operating successfully, while the second phase will allow for signal blocking. The implementation of the system aims to prevent illegal communication by prisoners and enhance security. The first phase has proven effective, with the recent detection and seizure of a mobile phone used to record and distribute video. The prisons do not publicize the details of the seizures in order to maintain the effectiveness of the controls. The evaluation of financial offers for the second phase is currently underway. The new system is expected not to affect the signals in neighboring areas, as it has been designed to avoid side effects. The experience from the previous system, which never worked and led to the termination of the contract, has been taken into account to avoid similar problems. The Audit Office had condemned the involved services for the delays and extensions granted for the completion of the project.
