Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Cyprus, according to statements by Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides at a conference on cardiovascular health. Although the percentage of deaths from cardiovascular diseases has decreased from 40% to 24%, it remains significant, with 87% of deaths occurring in individuals over the age of 65. The most common causes of cardiovascular death are myocardial infarction, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. The Minister of Health emphasized the importance of prevention, suggesting the adoption of healthy lifestyles, such as quitting smoking, proper nutrition, and regular exercise. The Minister also referred to the new European Union (EU) plan, “Safe Hearts Plan,” which aims to strengthen the prevention, early diagnosis, and effective management of cardiovascular diseases. Cyprus, during its Presidency, will align its actions with this plan. The Ministry of Health is investing in strengthening primary and secondary prevention, upgrading the healthcare system, and supporting research and innovation. A National Strategy for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases has already been developed and approved, including a comprehensive framework for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
