Cardiovascular Diseases Remain Leading Cause of Death in Cyprus

The Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, announced that cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Cyprus, although the percentage of deaths attributed to them has decreased from 40% to 24%. 87% of deaths from cardiovascular disease occur in people over 65 years of age, with the most common causes being heart attack, atherosclerosis, heart failure and stroke. The Minister stressed the importance of prevention through lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and healthy eating. He also referred to the new European plan “Safe Hearts Plan” and the need for people-centered policies for cardiovascular health, with an emphasis on equal access to prevention and treatment programs. The Ministry of Health is investing in primary and secondary prevention, strengthening the health system and research.
